From Business System to Supply Chain and Production in Japan

From Business System to Supply Chain and Production in Japan

This book comes from the author's PhD thesis for the PhD in "Economia e Finanza nel Governo dell'Impresa" ("Business administration and finance for firm's governance" at University of Rome La Sapienza, in Italy. The work was written in 2003 during the author's research semester at the Faculty of Economics of University of Nagasaki in Japan. The book attempts to explain why and how the lean production is deeply rooted in the Japanese culture and the Japanese business environment. In order to understand the Japanese supply chain we first have to understand what Japanese do in their factories and how they do it. Considering production and business environment as a unique fields of study and research the book discusses and sheds the light on the links among them in the Japanese business contest. This is done analyzing the single elements of lean production and JIT while considering the uniqueness of Japanese business system, in order to demonstrate the relations between the business system and the organization of production and supply chain in Japan.

Supply Chain Management at Warp Speed: Integrating the System from End to End

Supply Chain Management at Warp Speed: Integrating the System from End to End

In 2000, Schragenheim and Dettmer published the ground-breaking Manufacturing at Warp Speed. At the time, the cutting-edge ideas expressed were the original work of the authors and not well-known beyond the book’s audience. In the years that followed, Dr. Eliyahu Goldratt, father of the Theory of Constraints (TOC), adopted their ideas, added his own valuable insights, and popularized them worldwide. Supply Chain Management at Warp Speed serves as the sequel that refines and updates the former approach to production management with new ideas that complement earlier tactics. The authors’ prime motivation for writing this book was to integrate the TOC method for managing the distribution of finished goods with the acquisition of raw materials and the manufacturing process. The result is the first book to describe, in detail, the application of the TOC approach to assured availability in distribution, for both original equipment manufacturers and retailers. "State-Of-The-Art" in Applying Theory of Constraints This cutting-edge reference broadens the scope of its predecessor by integrating manufacturing, distribution, and raw material management into a single end-to-end supply chain. It addresses the new demands taken on when a firm offers to handle rush orders. It also reviews the issues surrounding availability and the management of inventory moving through distribution systems. Fully illustrated, with numerous examples, case studies, and manufacturing scenarios, Supply Chain Management at Warp Speed provides TOC practitioners with the tools needed to address the performance issues of the entire supply chain and develop solutions that represent a win for the end-user as well as stakeholders along the entire supply chain.

Understanding Supply Chain Complexity: An approach integrating performance measurement and System Dynamics

Understanding Supply Chain Complexity: An approach integrating performance measurement and System Dynamics

Supply chains are complex adaptive systems since they are made up of many and different components interconnected by a high number of non linear relationships. Nowadays, several circumstances contribute to raise the level of supply chain complexity, such as short product lifecycles and geographically distributed manufacturing and logistics systems. In this context, traditional management approaches based on a mechanistic view of supply chains as "simple systems in simple environments" are clearly inadequate. However, before developing new models, a deep understanding of what drives supply chain complexity and of its consequences on organizational behavior is needed. The present work proposes an approach for analyzing both causes and effects of supply chain complexity by integrating performance measurement and System Dynamics modeling and simulation methodology. The approach is applied to two case studies. The first case is taken from the automotive industry, while the second one is related to the apparel sector. In addition, a preliminary study on how performance measurement may help deal with service supply chain complexity is detailed by considering the case for hospitals.

Design, Analysis and Optimization of Supply Chains: A System Dynamics Approach

Design, Analysis and Optimization of Supply Chains: A System Dynamics Approach

Intended for an audience of graduate students, executive MBA students, and mid-to upper level government and corporate managers, this book examines the complexity of the types of organizations that comprise a modern supply chain, the problems that arise as a result of this complexity, and the solutions and analytical approaches available to managers that can help resolve these real world problems and dilemmas. The modern enterprise, be it a large corporation or a government agency, has two key dimensions of complexity: static and dynamic. The static complexity refers to the remarkable number of companies and agencies that enable delivery of the product or service. A static 'snapshot' of this end-to-end enterprise would reveal hundreds if not thousands of companies involved in the supply network and many additional firms involved in the distribution and delivery to customers. Planning, communication, coordination and execution of this large system network is fundamentally challenging just because of the sheer size. This large, extended network represents the static complexity. The dynamic complexity arises from the difficulty of managing the performance of this extended enterprise over time. This requires having the appropriate metrics to track performance over time, the management skills to develop strategies, the ability to collect and monitor the correct data for true visibility, and the recognition and understanding of the long lags between actions and results. This book incorporates real-world examples and cases, representing actual complex enterprise systems including firms involved and with long lead times, to illustrate the multi-faceted activities occurring within a modern supply chain and the challenges they pose to managers. Simulation and optimization techniques are introduced and used to develop strategies for improved performance.

Crush Depth Alert: Solutions For Supplying Power To America's Distressed Financial Systems

Crush Depth Alert: Solutions For Supplying Power To America's Distressed Financial Systems

In "Crush Depth Alert" a 'true insider' gives the reader the real factors that led America into the Greatest Recession Since the Great Depression (GRSGD). Concise, easy to understand data analysis takes the reader into the heart of darkness where privately owned Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) called Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac purchase products from their own portfolios and further supplement that policy by continuously lowering mortgage rates, placing the country at risk. Overlooking reasonable fiduciary standards in their underwriting systems, the GSEs and big banks encouraged American homeowners to increase mortgage debt well above the rate of America's economic GNP growth. Author, James Boswell, looks at public FDIC figures only to find that banks did not need a government TARP bailout. The figures show that they were simply short on cash and did not want to sell assets at bottom line prices. Boswell illustrates the consequences as a crush depth alert, providing a parallel analogy that the United States is the 'USS United States', a nuclear submarine experiencing 'flooding in the engine room'. Boswell says every system and operation on a submarine has to work efficiently to support mission objectives. One weak valve can 'scram' the reactor and take the ship down. The stresses placed on the housing sector of the economy weakened it as an engine valve that provides power to the economy and individual homeowners. Boswell's concern is that this is not the only weak valve. He sounds the alert that without action the 'USS United States' risks reaching crush depth, a point of no return to the surface. Understanding the problem is just the beginning. Boswell is out to bring the 'USS United States' to the surface. "Crush Depth Alert" is filled with recommendations for adding energy to economic engines including: regulations; the elimination of certain policies, operations and organizations; a focus on innovation and a sense of accountability and pride in excellence; the use of performance evaluation and risk management tools for optimum performance, early identification of problems and the curbing of waste and fraud. Boswell brings optimism and clarity where many other authors on this subject bring woolly thinking, speculation and dumbfounded scenarios. James Boswell's authority comes from twelve years monitoring the risk of half a trillion dollar portfolio of mortgage-backed securities that carried the Full Faith and Credit Guaranty of the United States behind them; from helping Ginnie Mae work through the Savings & Loan crisis of the 1980's and 1990's; from recognition of his work for Ginnie Mae-receiving a Vice-Presidential Award in 1995; from his publications in the Mortgage Banking Association's "Mortgage Banking Magazine" and Jess Lederman's "The Handbook of Mortgage Banking: Trends, Opportunities and Strategies"; from his work with Tristan Yates developing PERC (Performance Evaluation Report Card) a methodology tool that was a 2010 top ten finalist in the WIPRO-Knowledge@Wharton Innovation Tournament; and from his educational degrees from Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

The Household Property Inventory Workbook is one purchase you will wish you had made years ago. Not just for property owners, this book is for anyone with names, dates, and documents to remember. If you have valuable jewelry, art, computers, sports and exercise equipment-this is the book to keep track of serial numbers, sales receipts and other information. If it's in your home...put it in this book! The Workbook begins with all the primary household family members' vital statistics: dates and places of birth, websites, e-mails, and cell numbers. If something happens to you and you're in the hospital and the neighbor needs to feed your three cats and two dogs, do you panic? No, you tell him where the Inventory Workbook is and he is all set to take care of your furry friends. Heaven forbid your home is lost to fire, flood, or other natural disaster. However, this is when the Workbook really shines. Your home and its contents are your biggest investments and you've spent a fortune insuring for earthquakes, tornados and theft, etc. It's the worst time in your life and the insurance company policy adjuster wants proof of your loss. You followed the Workbook and recorded the serial numbers of all your valuables; you photographed everything, and listed all sales receipts, and owners' manuals. You're covered! Just sit back and wait for the insurance company to cut you a check! This is just a small sampling of all the useful information recorded in the Workbook. I highly recommend that you pick one up for your home. The Inventory Workbook makes a great wedding or housewarming gift. If you have an adult child heading out on their own make sure he or she has a copy of the Workbook. Reviewed by W.R. Potter for Reader's Choice Literary Reviews
